Opening: Stir-Fried Pork Liver and Two Ounces of Yellow Wine

A plate of stir-fried pork liver, two ounces of yellow wine — that was the house rule at the Victory Restaurant in his small Jiangnan town, and it was also the most dignified meal of Xu Sanguan's life. Before selling blood you drink your stomach full of cold water to swell the blood up; after selling it you eat the liver and drink the wine to make up what you lost, or your body won't hold together. He learned that rule once and lived by it for the rest of his life.

He hauls cocoons for a silk factory, in and out of the mill gate every day. His muscle isn't worth anything; what's worth something is the blood in his veins. Short on money to marry — sell blood. His son breaks something and there's no cash to cover it — sell blood. A famine year and five mouths with nothing to cook — sell blood. He walks that road more than a dozen times, from his early twenties until his hair goes white, until finally even the blood broker won't take what he's selling — too old, the man says, blood like that is only good for varnishing furniture.

What Kind of Book Is This

Chronicle of a Blood Merchant is the novel Yu Hua published in 1995, and together with To Live it forms one of the two cornerstones of his turn from avant-garde fiction to realism. The story runs from the middle of the twentieth century to the early years of Reform and Opening, an ordinary working-class family taking one wave of history after another for forty years, with Xu Sanguan holding the line each time by rolling up his sleeve. It's remembered not just for the hardship it depicts, but for how Yu Hua writes it: in flat, almost repetitive, deeply restrained prose that never cries out, the way a neighbor might mention family troubles over dinner without raising his voice.

Characters and World

Xu Sanguan is the family's fulcrum. He's a nag, a penny-pincher, always calculating, and the line he reaches for most often is that Yile isn't really his. But when trouble comes, he's the one who grits his teeth and sells his blood. His wife, Xu Yulan, fries dough sticks at a stall on the corner, quick-tempered and loud, and before their marriage she'd had one encounter with a dockworker named He Xiaoyong — a secret kept for nine years, until their son grew up looking more and more like He Xiaoyong and gave it away. It became a splinter Xu Sanguan could never work out of his chest.

Of the three sons, the eldest, Yile, is the child Xu Yulan had with He Xiaoyong before her marriage — Xu Sanguan knows it in his bones even as he refuses to let it go unmentioned. Erle and Sanle are his own, and gentler by nature. When Yile was nine he hurt the blacksmith's son with a rock, and the dispute over damages tore the family's dignity open overnight. The men who first led Xu Sanguan into blood selling were two old farmers from his village, Genlong and Afang — Genlong later sold his own blood until it killed him, the book's coldest warning about where that road ends. The world of the novel is small, just a handful of streets: the silk factory gate, cocoons piled up like a mountain, the greasy wooden tables of the Victory Restaurant, the long bench outside the hospital's blood station, the well and shoulder pole down by the river. There isn't much of it, and it comes back again and again, until a reader could draw the whole map with eyes closed.

When Xu Yulan hears what happened, she doesn't say a word — she just grabs his arm and marches him to the Victory Restaurant. She sits down hard and shouts at the counter: three plates of stir-fried pork liver, three bowls of yellow wine. Xu Sanguan has only ever let himself order one plate at a time; today she orders him three. When the liver comes, he eats and cries at once, not caring who sees.

That's the ending Yu Hua gives this book — not a reversal of fortune, not revenge, just a wife making up, properly and in full, the meal her husband has spent his whole life owing himself. Anyone reading this stops for a second: a man who spent his whole life doing sums is finally undone by three plates of pork liver.

The First Blood Sale: How the Rule Got Made

Xu Sanguan's first blood sale was Genlong and Afang's doing. He was in his early twenties then, with no money in his pocket to take a wife. The two old farmers taught him the drill: drink your fill of water before you go, to swell the blood up; and once they've drawn it, go straight to the Victory Restaurant for a plate of stir-fried pork liver and two ounces of yellow wine, or you'll collapse on the spot. It sounds absurd as rules go, but it was the only safety net a poor man had when he was selling off pieces of his own body — patch the life back together first, before the money from selling it even has time to go cold in your hand.

Yu Hua writes the scene with almost no adjectives. Genlong talks, Afang hands over water, Xu Sanguan walks into the Victory Restaurant clutching the bills he just sold his blood for — action after action, sentences short as ledger entries. Before the reader can catch up, he's already used the money to marry Xu Yulan, and Yile, Erle, and Sanle have followed. That first sale reads like a grand opening: from here on he's signed a standing contract with his own veins, and every time the family comes up short, he goes back to draw against it.

Yile's Parentage Comes Out: The Family Nearly Loses Everything

When Yile was nine he threw a rock and drew blood from the blacksmith's son. The blacksmith came to the door for damages, and Xu Sanguan blurted out the line at once — Yile isn't even mine, why should I pay for him — true, and also pure instinct, the reflex of a man guarding his money and his family in the same breath. It backed He Xiaoyong into admitting the truth, and after that there was no hiding how much Yile had come to look like him. The neighbors stared and whispered, and the nine years Xu Sanguan had spent a cuckold without knowing it landed on him all at once.

Yu Hua writes this passage cold. There's no screaming fight, just Xu Sanguan sitting at the table running the numbers over and over, trying to work out whether the little the family owns can be saved. And yet at the most humiliating moment of his life, he does the most decent thing in the book — years later, when He Xiaoyong is dying after a traffic accident, and superstition says only someone not related by blood can climb onto the roof and call his soul back, Xu Sanguan sends Yile to do it. Sharp-tongued on one side, willing to give ground when it matters most on the other — that's the twist this man is built from.

Famine and Cooking with Words: Fifty-Seven Days of Corn Porridge

During the three years of famine the family lived on corn porridge for fifty-seven straight days, until the children cried at the sight of the bowl. One evening Xu Sanguan called his three sons to the table, closed his eyes, and announced that tonight they were having red-braised pork — and then he cooked it with his mouth, dish by dish: when the meat goes into the pan, when the soy sauce goes in, how the sauce reduces at the end. Then came braised crucian carp, fried shrimp, stewed pork ribs — four whole dishes narrated at that table before he opened his eyes again. His sons' stomachs growled the whole time. The bowls in front of them stayed empty.

It's the most heartbreaking passage in the book, and the most readable. Yu Hua doesn't write hunger itself — he writes a father replacing the spatula with words, filling an empty bowl with language. It can make you laugh out loud, and then stop you cold — because it turns out that even feeding a child's imagination takes something wrung out of a man at his poorest. Someone once said Yu Hua writes suffering with a dull knife, one that doesn't cut flesh but goes straight for the nerve. This is exactly that.

Struggle Sessions and Meat Hidden Under Rice: The Most Two-Faced Man in the Book

When the Cultural Revolution comes, Xu Yulan's old affair with He Xiaoyong gets dragged back into the light. They shave half her head, hang a wooden placard around her neck, and parade her through the streets to be denounced. At the struggle sessions Xu Sanguan stands in the crowd shouting the slogans along with everyone else, his face convincing enough. But every evening after work he carries a lunchbox down to her — white rice on top, and underneath it a bit of meat he's diced and simmered in soy sauce in secret. He squats beside her and watches her eat. He doesn't eat any of it himself.

Yu Hua doesn't play this scene for tears. Xu Sanguan keeps shouting the slogans, Xu Yulan keeps eating, the lunchbox goes down and comes back up, and no line of dialogue ever says I'm protecting you. Hiding the heaviest thing inside the lightest gesture is what Yu Hua does best — he never writes that he actually loves her. He only writes the rice turned over to show the meat underneath. The first time I read it, I put my chopsticks down and didn't pick them up again for a while.

Selling Blood to Save Yile: A Road of Blood Sales to Shanghai

After Yile is sent down to the countryside he falls gravely ill, close to death. Word reaches the city, and Xu Sanguan doesn't hesitate — he carries Yile on his back and sets out for Shanghai. He has no money for the road, so he stops in every town along the way to find a blood broker and sell. Sell, drink water to refill, rest a night, walk on, sell again. By the last few stops his own body is giving out, and in one town he collapses in the hospital and has to be given someone else's blood just to survive.

Yu Hua stays extremely restrained through the whole journey. No slogans, no tears — just the same actions at every town: ask where the hospital is, ask if the blood broker is in, write down his name and his weight. That near-mechanical repetition is exactly where the book's power lies. Repetition grinds a man's dignity down, and it also forces the reader to see how far this man will sell himself for a son who isn't even his.

Ending: Blood Only Fit for Varnishing Furniture

After Reform and Opening, life gets easier. The sons are grown, and the family no longer has to worry about food or clothes. One day, walking down the street, Xu Sanguan is suddenly seized by a craving for a plate of stir-fried pork liver and two ounces of yellow wine — not to pay for it with blood money this time, just because he wants it. He remembers that his whole life he's only ever let himself order that plate after selling blood, and before he knows what he's doing, he's walking into the hospital to sell blood for no reason but himself.

The young new blood broker takes one look at him: too old, he says, we don't want it. Taking it would be a waste — blood like that is only fit for varnishing furniture. It's only in that moment that Xu Sanguan understands the thing that has stood by him for most of his life — his blood — is worthless now. He walks all the way home crying, like a child.
