The Plot

I arrive in Paris with a little money in my pocket and move into Madame F.'s Hôtel des Trois Moineaux. By rights the money should last, except Boris and I, partners in bad luck, burn through it far too fast — or rather, real poverty never arrives all at once. It's a gate that closes slowly: first the meat goes, then the bread is cut in half, then the bread goes too, and finally the last decent piece of clothing is pawned.

What's hardest to sit through is the state that follows: nothing to do, and no way to stop moving. With no money you still have to look busy — a whole day spent standing in lines asking after work, then back to the hotel by evening, not daring to slow down as you pass the bakery. The hardest thing to write about hunger isn't the hunger itself; it's the exhaustion of a day spent doing nothing that still leaves you wrecked.

Boris drags me into dishwashing, or plongeur to give it its proper name — the man permanently crouched at the sink, at the very bottom of a grand hotel's kitchen. We start at a luxury hotel Orwell calls Hotel X, then move to a newly opened Russian restaurant, the Auberge de Jehan Cottard. The basement kitchen is hot as a steel furnace, the taps hiss steam, the frying pans spit oil. What needs washing isn't a few plates — it's mountains of pots, roasting trays, scorched pan bottoms, and you have to fit even a breath into the gaps.

Orwell gives over a whole chapter here to make one argument: the plongeur's grinding labor is, at bottom, pointless. Dishes could be washed by machine; pans could be soaked and handed down the line. But the polish of a grand hotel depends on customers never seeing a trace of a machine — so the men at the bottom get boiled in steam and grease, over and over, to buy the silverware and crystal upstairs their soft shine. It's social commentary lodged inside a personal narrative, delivered in a level voice, with a barb in every sentence.

I later leave Paris for London, hoping to find work. The work never comes, the money runs out first, and I drop into a poverty more complete than before — this time with nothing left to pawn either. I become an actual tramp: drifting around Trafalgar Square by day, living off soup-kitchen bread and whatever coins I can beg, and sleeping in a casual ward at night.

The London 'spike' — tramp slang for the casual ward — runs on rules so fussy they verge on the absurd: you can't sleep in the same one twice within a month, which means moving on to two or three different spikes a week. Tramps don't wander because they love wandering; the system forces them into permanent motion. Paddy Jaques and I are just two names being pushed around by that rule.

Bozo turns up on the pavement at Trafalgar Square, making his living with chalk drawings — the locals call him a screever. One leg came out shorter after his fall, so he has to work bent sideways close to the ground, but he refuses to feel sorry for himself. After he packs up we sit on the square's steps while he talks me through Orion and Venus. When Orwell writes this character, the pen moves with respect, not pity.

The book's final movement offers no triumphant escape from poverty, only two reflections set side by side. The Paris ordeal wrings a man into a laborer chained to a sink; the London casual-ward system forces a homeless man into someone who never stops moving. Two cities, two systems, and what real poverty strips away isn't a person's dignity in the abstract — it's the freedom to act, the plain right to choose where you sleep tonight or what you do tomorrow.

Themes and Craft

The book is really doing two things. First, it makes poverty concrete without wasting a word on abstraction: hunger isn't an adjective, it's half a loaf of bread today, a quarter loaf tomorrow, and the day after that your knees going weak at the sight of a bakery sign. Pawning isn't a dramatic climax either, it's two trips to the pawnshop a week for a few francs each time. Second, it writes the poor as people, not as material to be used — Charlie, the respectable type who boasts in the bar about having once been poor, gets the cold treatment from Orwell, while Bozo, the lame man who genuinely lives off his chalk drawings, is written until he glows.

The plongeur passage rewards the closest attention. Orwell isn't complaining about his own suffering; he's calmly taking the labor apart, separating what's genuinely necessary from what's only forced onto the bottom rung so customers upstairs never see a machine at work. It reads like an early draft of the political allegory he'd later perfect in Animal Farm, except the target here isn't a totalitarian machine, it's the pretensions of a grand hotel.

This book's ethical stance is participation, not observation. Orwell throws himself into the dish sink, into the casual-ward line, into the soup kitchen. Nine years later, his fiction would carry the same conviction — that honest writing means first living as the kind of person you're writing about — but that conviction begins right here, in this slim book. He lived it before he wrote it.

A guide can give you the skeleton, not the smell. What makes this book worth reading isn't the plot, it's the body of it — the suffocating blast of heat off a steam boiler in your face, soup-kitchen bread so cold it hurts your teeth, fleas that keep you turning all night, a straw mattress in the casual ward pressing a red line into your back. Orwell writes none of it for effect; it's plain description, which is exactly why the poor in his pages cut into the reader.
