A cast-iron gate slams shut, the smoke still hanging in the air, but the breech is no longer packed with the kind of shell that used to knock down city walls. It holds an aluminum cylinder with three living men inside, staring up at a night sky more than a hundred kilometers away. There is no white NASA rocket here, no countdown clock, no hiss of liquid fuel. What launches them is a cast-iron cannon standing in the Florida mud, its mouth tipped skyward, wide enough to swallow an entire train. Verne wrote this thirty years before the Wright brothers and nearly a century before a real crewed rocket left the ground, and he had already worked out, in earnest, the ballistics of firing a man to the Moon.
From the Earth to the Moon is Jules Verne's 1865 novel; its sequel, Around the Moon, came out in 1870, and the story only makes complete sense read together. It sits near the root of science fiction history: much of our modern intuition about what a crewed spacecraft should look like, where a launch site should sit, how a capsule gets recovered, traces back to a literary first draft in this book. It also belongs to the kind of classic worth reading even when you already know how it ends, because what makes it good was never the ending. It's the exhaustive engineering fever, the half-true ballistics calculations, and the way a handful of characters react to each other once this enormous cannon has forced them together.
The story opens just after the Civil War ends. In Baltimore, Maryland, a band of ordnance engineers called the Baltimore Gun Club had helped the Union win the war by casting its cannons, and when the war stopped, so did the contracts. The whole club sat idle and restless. Its president, Impey Barbicane, is cold-faced, exacting, and the kind of man nobody talks back to once he's given an order. Out of that boredom he drops a plan that stuns the country: cast the largest gun ever built and fire a shell straight at the Moon.
His old rival is Captain Nicholl, from Philadelphia, a maker of armor plate. For years the two of them had run a private arms race straight out of the spear-and-shield playbook — he casts an inch more armor, so Barbicane casts a cannon that punches through an inch more, and around it goes again. The moment the Moon plan goes public, Nicholl comes out swinging against it, staking a string of ever-larger bets in writing that the whole scheme will fail at some stage. Neither man is really the villain; they're just two old competitors who won't give an inch. What actually changes things is the arrival of a Frenchman.

In spite of all his arguments, however, Captain Nicholl remained alone in his opinion.

The launch site is fixed at Stone's Hill, near Tampa Town, Florida. Crews work day and night, digging out the entire hill into a pit big enough to swallow a cathedral, then casting inside it an iron cannon they name the Columbiad. Its mouth points straight up at the sky, and the barrel alone runs to an absurd length. This construction work is the middle third of the book, and Verne writes it dead seriously — the bronze lining, the molds, the annealing, the loading sequence, all laid out like an engineer's report. For readers then, and readers now, the pleasure of this stretch comes precisely from watching the numbers add up.
Just as the great gun nears completion, Barbicane gets a telegram from France, signed Michel Ardan. The man is a talker and an adventurer, and his message boils down to one line: he isn't just building a shell, he's riding inside it, and any reasonable person should get out of his way. He becomes a global news story before he even sets foot in America. Ardan's arrival pushes the whole project from an engineering marvel into a human event, because his presence forces Barbicane to redesign the solid metal shell into a sealed aluminum cabin with a water cushion, an air supply, and portholes.

It's this same big-hearted Frenchman who dismantles the old feud between Barbicane and Nicholl face to face. The scene plays out like something out of a nineteenth-century American Western — the two men nearly draw on each other before Ardan talks them both down. On the night of the launch, three men climb into the shell: Barbicane, Nicholl, Ardan, along with two hunting dogs. A pair of longtime rivals in the same trade and a naysayer who only wanted to watch it fail, both wedged into the same shell by a third man who showed up out of nowhere.
Verne writes the night of the launch like a national holiday, the whole country turned out to watch. A dull boom, and the Columbiad's lining shatters to pieces — but the living cargo is already airborne. The three men survive the brutal shock of firing; one of the dogs doesn't, and once its body is pushed out through the hatch it drifts eerily alongside the shell. It's the first time fiction had looked straight at weightlessness.

The metal shell slams into the Pacific and is fished out by a U.S. Navy warship that happens to be cruising nearby. The three travelers come home to a hero's welcome, buried in newspapers and medals. The Gun Club's next goal is already forming: build an even bigger cannon.

Thematically, From the Earth to the Moon carries an irony hard to miss: men who cast the guns that won a war don't turn their iron work toward plowshares or railroads once it's over. They keep casting guns — they just tilt the muzzle up, off the battlefield and toward the Moon. A grand peacetime project turns out to run on the same stubbornness and the same I-can-do-it-too rivalry that drove the war. So when Barbicane and Nicholl go from enemies to travel companions, it isn't really a reversal — it's the same trade logic taken to its conclusion. They were always in the same business, and the accounts only balance once they're sitting in the same shell.
A second layer is Verne's sharp-eyed take on American-style mania: the newspaper hype, the public fundraising, the whole nation whipped into a launch-day frenzy — he writes it with real admiration and can't stop laughing at it either. Maston carries most of the book's comedy on his own. A man with a chunk of his skull missing turns out to be the most relentless optimist and technical booster of them all, promising every newspaper in reach that humanity will reach the Moon. Verne pins this cheerful, unstoppable confidence to the page as a specimen of the American character.
There is also the book's formal texture. In work like this, Verne writes engineering calculation almost as if it were poetry — chamber pressure, muzzle velocity, orbital equations, the depth of the water cushion, page after page he can't bring himself to leave. Reading it gives you an odd suspended feeling: you know perfectly well a cannon shell could never work as a spacecraft, and yet the calculations stay dead serious, and that seriousness is exactly what keeps modern readers coming back. The first time I hit the passage where he lays out specific lunar trajectory figures, one after another, it stopped me for a second — this is where the grammar of what we now call hard science fiction actually comes from.
Finally, Verne never lets the three men actually land. That one meteor pushes the first Moon landing clean out of this novel and hands it, a full century later, to Armstrong and Aldrin. This deliberate near-miss is the book's most ironic and most decent piece of humanizing: the landing turns into a loop around the Moon and a splashdown at sea. The flag that never got planted in the lunar dust never gets planted here. A landing invented on the page might have felt cheap; a real fall, pulled back by gravity, is what still makes this book worth reading after every later writer went on to tell a more successful version of the same story.

No summary can do this part for you: go listen to every piece of engineering jargon Verne typed out, and go laugh at a steam age that used a cast-iron cannon as its launch vehicle.
